SOLD - 12g Round Action by James MacNaughton & Sons - 30 x 2 3/4" barrels
SOLD – Now here is an unusual one. This MacNaughton round action was built circa 1898 with 30″ steel barrels which is rare as MacNaughton tended to favour a length of 28″. These barrels have also just been re-proved to 2 3/4″. Engraving style is MacNaughton’s fine scroll and the words, “MacNaughton Edinburgh” are signed across the ball of the action. Fitted with MacNaughton’s pendulum safe, the fore-end has a lever-latch fastener and the ejector system is MacNaughton’s coil spring, which predates the bow spring version. The straight-hand stock, including a Silver’s recoil pad, measures 15″ and the gun is presented its maker’s case with trade label. One of the more interesting things about this gun is that it was presented to the Scottish Gun Club as a prize and was won by the current owner’s grandfather in July 1907. He has kindly sent a picture of his father in 1938 holding this, his winning round action. I’ve been able to research the score that day and this gun was won with a score of 13 out of 21. So, all-in-all, a real historic Edinburgh-built round action which, with the left choke reduced, would be capable of firing standard steel cartridges..
