SOLD - 28g Round Action by James MacNaughton & Sons - 24 x 2 3/4"
This is an incredibly rare round action built by James MacNaughton & Sons in 1915. It has the typical barrel length of 24” with 2 3/4” chambers and boasts 45 wall thicknesses in each tube. MacNaughtons like these balance beautifully and the majority of them are non-ejecting and lever cocking. However, this gun is barrel-cocking and is the only one I’ve seen with MacNaughton’s bow spring ejector system which, in my opinion, makes it a more modern gun. The older system, with its coil spring mechanism tended to lack power, however this little gun ejects beautifully. Action and lock plates are engraved with fine scroll, beaded and roped borders and the name, “MacNaughton, Edinburgh” is engraved across the ball of the action. The fore-end catch is lever-armed, it has a pendulum safe and all the screws are original and in perfect condition. Stock dimensions are 14 3/8” and the woodwork is full length and totally original, never having been re-chequered or oiled since new. 20% of the original hardening colour remains and it comes in a lightweight, leather case with trade label – not its original case, but it’s a very good one. This gun is by far the best I’ve seen.
