16g hammergun by John Manton & Son - 28 1/2" x 2 1/2" Damascus barrels
This is unusual. It’s a “John Manton & Son”, which has been converted from a muzzle loader by “Thomas Bissel”. The top rib of the Damascus barrels reads “John Manton & Son, Dover Street, London, converted to Breech loader by Thomas Bissel, 75 Cranham Road, South Bermondsey, London”. Nitro-proved in London in 2008, the action and locks are engraved with bold acanthus scroll with a pointing dog on the bow of the guard along with pheasants engraved on the tang of the guard. Converted to a side lever opening, the gun has rebounding bar locks. It’s a lovely old thing that hasn’t been restored. Although now a breech loader, it is very muzzle loader-like, if that makes sense?
