SOLD - 12g ‘Lockfast’ hammer gun by J D Dougall – 30” x 2 ¾” Damascus barrels
SOLD – This J D Dougall ‘Lockfast’ gun was built circa 1870. It’s quite unusual in that it’s not a side lever, it has a push forward under lever and the top rib of the 30” re-proved Damascus barrels reads, “J D Dougall, gun/rifle manufacturer to HRH the Prince of Wales, 59 St. James Street, London”. Engraving style on the action and locks is fine rose and scroll with the Prince of Wales feathers engraved within a cartouche on the top strap. With the back action locks which were made by Stanton and the noseless hammers, they are about as elegant as I’ve seen. This gun has its original woodwork which hasn’t been altered or restored and the butt end is fitted with heel and toe plates and the fore-end bolted. Having measured the barrels carefully, they are just below 20 thou, however they have just sailed through a 2 ¾” nitro-reproof. All in all, a fabulous example and a beautiful gun.
