12g sidelock non-ejector by J. R. Gow & Sons - 26" x 2 3/4" barrels
Here is a most unusual gun, built by J. R. Gow & Sons of Dundee, circa 1885. The tumblers or hammers are on the outside of the lock plates, which is a variant on David Bentley’s patent of 1884. The tumbler would not only have fired the shells but would have acted as a very obvious cocking indicator, bearing in mind this gun was built in the era of the hammer gun. Engraving style on the locks is fine scroll, and the barrels are sleeved to 26″ with 2 3/4″ chambers and a doll’s head extension. Sleeved and proved in London in 1991, it’s fair to say it’s not in its first flush of youth, however it is original, quirky and most unusual. The 14 1/4″ straight hand stock includes a 3/4″ Bakelite extension. Once again, with the chokes reduced, this gun will comfortably fire standard steel cartridges. Please note that the pictures are prior to the barrels being polished and blacked. Although a little worn, the build quality of this gun is fabulous and, may I add, try and find another one.
