12g SLE by W. Horton - 28" x 2 1/2" barrels
Now this is a beautiful gun. Interestingly, I sold this 35 years ago and it is in pretty much the same condition now as it was back then. Incorporating Horton’s patent adjustable trigger system which lies within the Stanton locks, the quality of which I hope you can see from the picture.
Engraved on the action and locks are oak leaves and acorns with fluted fences engraved on the balls of the action.
28″ x 2 1/2″ steel barrels which incorporate Horton’s Polygrip lever system, have ‘W. Horton, 98 Buchanan St., Glasgow Patent Adjustable Trigger Action’ engraved onto the top rib. Inlaid on the breech end and bow of the guard is a gold ‘1’ as this gun was built as number one of a pair, and the inside of the fore-end iron is also engraved with a ‘1’.
The highly figured 14 3/4″ stock is in very good condition with very fine, crisp chequering. Traditionally Horton would fit round escutcheon plates to the stock and in some cases they would have an assay mark. I contacted my chum Steve the jeweller and he was able to identify that the 18ct gold escutcheon was assayed in Glasgow in 1903 with a sponsors mark of possibly Lindsay & Paisley Ltd. Overall this gun is of an astonishing build quality, and is only the third one I have seen in 40 years. It goes without saying, it opens and closes beautifully.
