12g round action by John Dickson & Son - 28" x 2 1/2" barrels
This stunning round action was delivered June 1892 and, quite unusually for the vintage, it has 28″ Damascus barrels rather than 29″ or 30″. The gun is marked No 1 of a pair although was originally ordered as a single gun. Engraving style on the action and lock is Sumner’s finest scroll with ‘John Dickson & Son Patent’ within a scrolling banner, and the gun has gold cocking indicators. The 14 1/2″ beautifully-figured, French walnut stock includes a buffalo horn extension piece, and is chequered with a period-style, Dickson chequering pattern. The other unusual thing about this gun is that it was originally proved at 12, nitro proved to .729 and 130 years on, only measures .732 in both tubes, with fabulous wall thicknesses of 26 and 24 thou. This is clearly a gun that has been looked after, you just don’t see many with barrels in this condition.
